F bacon unterscheidet eine sinnliche und eine geistig-vernünftige Seele (de dign. IV, 3; Nov. Organ. II, "anima sensibilis sice brutorum plane substantia corporea censenda est, a calore attenuata et facta ineisibilis (de dign. IV, hobbes identifiziert die Seele mit dem Gehirn (s. Materialis mus). Den strengen Dualismus (s. D.) zwischen Leib und Seele begründet descartes. Seele und Leib sind "substantiae incompletae (resp. Ad. Obi. IV), die durch Gott geeint sind. Die Seele ist vom Kö1per vollständig verschieden, sie ist unstofflich, unausgedehnt, einfach, unvergänglich, denkendes Wesen (med. VI), Geist (s. Sie ist eine Substanz (s. D.) sui generis (princ. Philos. I. "examinantes quinam simas nos, qui omnia, quae a nobis diverses sunt, supponimus falsa esse, perspicue oidemus nullum extensionem, nee figuram, nee motum localem, nee quid simile, quod corpori sit tribuendum, ad naturam nostrum pertinere, sed cogitationem solam (1. C. I, Die Seele ist mit dem ganzen Körper geeint animam esse reeera iunctam toti corpori, Pass. An. I, 30) wirkt aber vorzugsweise von der Zirbeldrüse aus (s. Seelensitz). Die Seele ist durchaus einheitlich. "nobis enim non nisi una inest anima, quae.in se nullam varietatem partiam habet: eadem, quae sensitiva est, est etiam rationalis (l. C. I, Seele und Leib stehen miteinander in Wechselwirkung (3. In (luxus). Ahnlich lehren regis (syst. D. Philos. I, 1690, p. 154 ff.) 11. A. Nach mai.ebranche ist die Seele "ce moi qui pense, qui sent, qui peut (rech. I, 5; vgl. 111, Nach gassendi ist die tierische Seele "corporeum tenuissimum aliguod (philos. Op. Syut. II, set.
