Themis's family are brutally divided between right and left in the Greek Civil War, with Themis fighting for the communists. In incarceration she promises to care for the baby of a fellow prisoner, who she then raises alongside her own son. Later in life, as Greece becomes the theatre of further ideological division she watches one of the sons become drawn into the events.
