Sisters Margaret and Annie lost their mother years ago; they long for her every day. Their strictly religious father keeps the girls close, but he can't protect them forever. When a scandal rocks the family, the sisters are forced to leave their home.

The girls flee to Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter to stay with the one person they can rely on: their uncle Ebenezer, a goldsmith. Annie, passionate and hungry for experience, takes up work at a nearby pen factory and soon finds herself drawn into the struggles of her fellow workers. Margaret, employed by her uncle, finds that her path begins to cross with that of a mysterious silversmith. With each passing day, Margaret's attraction grows ever stronger . . .
