'Some time ago I happened to see a film by Orson Welles in which there's a scene that takes place in a room entirely made up of mirrors, where the person can no longer tell where he is and becomes completely disorientated . . . I think these people are trying to play the same game with us . . .'
When Montalbano comes to the aid of his new neighbour after the engine of her car is interfered with, the inspector can little imagine where this innocuous event will lead. For it soon transpires that Liliana Lombardo is being targeted by someone with a grudge against her.
Meanwhile the inspector finds himself drawn into another mystery when a bomb explodes outside an empty warehouse in Vigáta. But who was the bomb intended for? And why was it left in such a peculiar place?
The inspector soon realizes that he is being led into a hall of mirrors, where there is danger at every turn and nothing is quite clear . . .
