Although the Château Pape Clément is famous worldwide, it has received little attention from historians of the Bordelais vineyards because of the unusual circumstances of its creation. The estate was formed by the merger in 1810 of the Sainte-Marie de Belair estate, which was already well known in the early 17th century, with part of the estate of the archbishops of Bordeaux created in 1305. It is the history of these estates, and that of the joint estate created in 1868 with the appellation Château Pape Clément, down to 1940, that forms the subject of this book. The reader will discover the history of viticulture in the Graves of Pessac near Bordeaux in the later middle ages as well as how the vineyard expanded between the 15th and 18th centuries. The book contains many illustrations as well as translations of financial records of the vineyards of the archbishopric of Bordeaux in the 14th and 15th centuries.
