The surrealism of imagining contemporary humanitarian techniques applied to historical events indicates more than dramatic technological transformation; it also suggests limits to contemporary assumptions about common human feeling and associated action. What is it about the present, we might wonder, that casts the care of strangers in such a leading role? The contributors to this volume critique the "aid industry” in an attempt to answer these types of questions.
