A word from the author:
Having spent years trying to learn Mandarin the traditional way, I quickly realised that the
logic behind it was not suitable for me. Therefore, as a teacher I have spent the last 5 years
designing a Chinese grammar book which allows a native-born English speaker to go from
English grammar to Mandarin, rather than the traditional way of starting from Chinese
grammar and then relating it to English grammar. In this way, a native-English speaker, who
thinks in English, can learn to translate from English to Mandarin using this style of learning.
Who is this book for?
This book is for anyone wishing to learn how to use Chinese for speaking, reading and
writing. The information contained within beginner to intermediate and intermediate to
advanced is enough to pass HSK 5, but the books themselves are designed to get non-native
speakers to actually use Mandarin on a day-to-day basis. You might want to send messages,
write emails, conduct in-depth conversations, or give presentations in Mandarin. If so, then
the intermediate to advanced edition provides all the grammar needed to communicate with
native Chinese people about any issue, from everyday to more serious and specific.
How to use the book:
The book is divided into 140 units, and after every 7 units there is a summary page that can
be used to review what has been studied. With this book, students can add depth and weight
to their spoken and written Mandarin. If students do not have a basic grasp of Chinese
grammar, then the beginner to intermediate edition is recommended before commencement
of this book.
By the end of this book, students should be able to talk and write to an intermediate
and advanced level. Students will certainly be able to sit HSK 5 test and feel confident of
passing.
