    Canto Gregoriano

    Description

Gregorian Chants are the monophonic, unaccompanied, liturgical or Divine Service chants of the Western Christian Church, sung in the original language Latin - in a stricter sense the term is understood to mean the chants handed down from 10th to 12th century sources. Gregorian Chants are also the oldest pieces of written music to be handed down in Western and Central Europe - most of the melodies were written between 750 and 850 A.D. Although the name refers to Pope Gregory I (better known as Gregory the Great, who died in 604 A.D.) "Gregorian" first came into common use after 800.
This 10CD box set contains Gregorian Chants sung during the different festive seasons (Christmas, Easter, Ascension) and on different occasions (e.g. Feast of the Translation of Relics of St. Mark in Venice). The chants are performed by leading ensembles from Italy, Denmark and Germany.
