Suburban Boy. Related by a narrator careening, making his personal
statement from the edge of something. It is a setting everybody knows, but
nobody quite knows. The suburbs. Bayview, Long Island.
This is the place the protagonist, Peter, arrives at, in search of
"answers." Thirty-nine, single, white, male, down-and-out, he makes his
way to Bayview, in an attempt to discover a sense of purpose, meaning, an
abandoned joyfulness
I was going to go to Bayview, to the town where I had lived when I was a
boy. I was going to encamp myself there, at least for awhile. And I was
going to study the landscape. I was going to investigate. I was going to
excavate. I was going to dig. Like an archaeologist. Except that I wasn't
going to dig for crumbled artifacts, for bits of pottery or arrowheads. I
was going to dig for answers.
