Lardner retraces the path that led him to a memorable confrontation with the House Committee on Un-American Activities and later to federal prison and life on the Hollywood blacklist. One of the lucky few who were able to resume their careers, Lardner won yet another Oscar for the screenplay to "M.A.S.H." in 1970.

Una mirada al ultimo siglo Americano, esta autobiografia cuenta la historia de un galardonado guionista durante la epoca antigua del sistema "estudio" del cine. La historia se vuelve aun mas complicada ya que el autor es miembro del partido Comunista Americano. Lardner recuerda el camino que lo trajo a su famosa confrontacion con el comite encargado de descubrir y castigar a los comunistas, despues a la carcel federal y luego a la lista negra de Hollywood. Uno de los pocos que logro continuar su carrera, Lardner consiguio ganar su segundo premio Oscar en 1970 por el guion de la pelicula "M.A.S.H."
