The storm closes in on St. Kilda and all but a few left on the last ferry out. There are about fifty people left on the island, among them Carmen, a Spanish woman who works in a small hotel, and a few fishermen. The fishermen find a mysterious metallic container on the edge of the cliffs. It is a strange box brought over by the waves.

Through these characters full of nuances and secrets, trapped in the heart of a storm, Mikel Santiago poses the question that permeates through each page of the novel: how fare are you willing to go in order to survive?
