Tulla, one of the survivors of the sinking of the German ship Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945 by a Russian submarine, gives birth to a boy, Paul, only a few minutes after being rescued. When the child grows up he leaves Eastern Germany and moves to Western Germany to study journalism. Instead of using his journalistic insight to shed light on ongoing events, Paul becomes a mediocre journalist, but through his passion for computer science, he begins to unravel the truth about Germany and the obstacles it went through.
