This volume is the first in a series of publications arising from intensive programmes in the field of mathematics education for doctoral level students, supported by the European Commission under the Erasmus Action (Higher Education) of the Socrates programme. The intensive programme on which it is based was held in Linz, Austria during July 2003. It contains papers from both staff and students with interests in researching the teaching and learning of mathematics.
The development arose from the wider EUDORA Advanced Curriculum Development project which has aimed to develop collaboration at a European level in doctoral studies in the field of teaching and teacher education. This project has also been supported similarly by the European Commission.
Both of these developments have arisen as a result of long term institutional collaboration arising from the Thematic Network for Teacher Education in Europe (TNTEE).
