At the start of the twentieth century most American universities were Protestant in character, and even state universities required students to attend chapel; today, however, religion has been pushed to the margins of the academy. Marsden studies this transformation by telling the stories of leading institutions at critical periods, and ultimately argues for a greater exercise of religious outlooks in academia.
